5. Odell’s Odyssey
UGA vs. Auburn / November 15, 2003

The Dawgs were enjoying a historic afternoon Between The Hedges and were poised to beat Auburn at home for the first time in 12 years. UGA led 19-0 early in the 4th Quarter, but Auburn was driving to try to get back in the game. They got to about the 5 yard line and took a shot at the end zone. The pass was tipped straight up and middle linebacker Odell Thurman grabbed it and rumbled 99 yards the other way for an electric INT for TD to put the game way. A great way to end a LONG losing streak.

4. Little Billy Bennett Comes Up BIG
UGA vs. Alabama / October 5, 2002

On a sweltering, hot, and humid afternoon in Tuscaloosa, UGA went out to prove they were “man enough” to beat the Crimson Tide. The game went back and forth, with Bama taking a late 25-24 lead. UGA came marching back down the field towards the end zone we were sitting in. David Greene positioned us in field goal range and then it was up to Billy Bennett to kick us to a win:



3. Rocky Top on Mute
UGA vs. Tennessee / October 11, 2003

From a momentum standpoint, probably the biggest dual swing play I’ve ever seen. UGA was leading 13-7 late in the first half when the Vols marched down to inside our 5 yard line. Tennessee went to pound it in, but fumbled the snap/hand off. Safety Sean Jones was crashing the play and suddenly found himself running full speed the other way as the ball scooped up in his hands. 98 yards later, he was in the end zone, UGA went into the half up 20-7 instead of down 14-13, I was delirious with joy and excitement, and Neyland Stadium was a quiet as a morgue. From a wall of noise to silence in the span of 10 seconds. Unbelievable. Please also enjoy the UT fan's reaction at the 16 second mark to this play, priceless.

2. Tech Toppled. Again.
UGA vs. GA Tech / November 29, 1997

After going back and watching the sequence of plays, it really is remarkable that UGA was able to come back and win this game. Tech took a 24-21 lead with under a minute left. Mike Bobo brought the team flying back down the field with DB turned WR/playmaker Champ Bailey getting the ball for a big chunk of the yards. After a heartbreaking turn whew pass interference call on Tech, UGA had a second chance. And Bobo make it count by finding Corey Allen for his 2nd huge catch for a TD (the first being the Hail Mary against Auburn in ’96) with less than 10 seconds left to give us our 7th straight win over Tech.

1. 20 Years Is A Long Time To Wait
UGA vs. Arkansas / December 7, 2002

Perhaps it was where I was sitting in that I could see it develop the whole way through. Or the significance of what it led to. Either way, I’ve always held a special place in my heart for this, my favorite play. UGA finally was playing for the SEC Championship that night. Despite being a heavy favorite, I was still concerned we’d come out flat against the Hogs. Those fears were soon put to rest by a dominating first 3 plays by the defense, which forced a punt. On the punt, #22 Decory Bryant was set up on the outside to block one of the Arkansas “gunners”. Suddenly he started sprinting full speed right at the punter when the ball was snapped. As this happened, the Georgia Dome steadily got louder and louder as he got closer, and then set off the loudest explosion of noise I ever heard at any sporting event when his outstretched arms hit the punt and generated a “thud”. The punt was blocked; UGA recovered on the 2, and the coronation was on.

I realize I might be cheating a bit, but I decided to split my favorite plays into a 2 part post since there will be links and a few imbedded videos which make make one post way to long/hard to follow. So here are choices 10-6 for my favorite personally witnessed UGA plays since 1994 (the play will either have a link to view via Youtube or be imbedded):


10. Boss Bailey Leaping Tall Buildings
Georgia vs. Tennessee / October 12, 2002


Watch how high Boss gets on this field goal attempt, it seriously is the highest I've ever seen anyone jump!





9. Cahill Calls It From the Upper Deck
Georgia vs. Virginia Tech / December 30, 2006


Rebecca and I got to go to the Chick-fil-A (aka Peach) Bowl that year and had seats way up in the rafters of the Dome. After an abyssmal first half that saw UGA fall behind 21-3, we came out with a bit of momentum to start the second half and got a field goal to make it 21-6. As the teams were coming out of the TV timeout, I turned to the guy sitting next to me and said "Boy, I'd love to see a suprise onside kick right here." And wouldn't know know that is EXACTLY what Georgia pulled off (at the 33 second mark on the link and then again at 2:15 with more analysis from the TV guys). There were many other plays that helped guide us to a great comeback win that night, but I'll always remember the fact that I was an honorary special teams coach (at least for one play).


8. The Leap
Georgia vs. Central Michigan / September 6, 2008


Besides the obvious unbelieveable athleticism displayed by Knowshon Moreno on this play, we were lucky to have Zachary with us at the game. After watching the play, he turned to me and said "Did you SEE that Daddy?!?!" I sure did Zachary, and I look foward to seeing many more great plays with our children in the future.


7. The Fake Out
Georgia vs. Vanderbilt / October 19, 2002


Now THAT is how a QB executes a play-action pass. I felt for the Vandy defensive back who got fooled. He probably got a 1600 on his SAT but yet couldn't pay attention to where a football was.

6. One and Done Baby!
Georgia vs. Alabama / September 22, 2007

A classic back and forth tussel with UGA and the Crimson Tide could not be settled in 60 minutes. Having won the OT coin toss, we wisely chose defense first so we could see how many points we would need. Bama got a field goal to make it 23-20, and we took over on the 25 yard line. What a great call my Mike Bobo and the offensive staff to go for broke on the first play. Although we were way on the other side of the stadium, it was bedlam once it happened.

Best Of UGA - Vol. 2 - "The Games"

The second of a 4 part series leading up to the start of the UGA football season. The only criteria I am using is the fact that I personally had to witness the subject/person listed. On to my favorite UGA games of the past 15 years (1994-2008)!

10. November 16, 1994 / Georgia 56-Auburn 49
The first overtime game in SEC history. UGA V almost takes Robert Baker from a bass to a soprano. UGA comes back from the dead and ties the game with a hail mary pass as time expires. After the defense finally stops Auburn in the 4th OT, we proceeded to be herded out and run full speed from our seats to the band buses, still shaking our heads in amazement as to how we won that game.

9. September 3, 2005 / Georgia 48-Bosie State 13
Many of the so-called pundits had pegged UGA ripe for an upset with an up and coming challenger coming into Sanford Stadium to start the 2005 campaign. Our friends from Idaho were quickly shown how we play football SEC style, and DJ Shockley showed that there would be life after David Greene. The crowd was alive from start to finish, reminding our guests that (at least that day) they were over-rated (clap, clap, clap-clap-clap).

8. October 11, 2003 / Georgia 41-Tennessee 14
UGA took control early and held a 13-7 lead as the first half wound down. Casey “Iceman” Claussen rallied UT and had them positioned to take the lead as they sat inside our 5 yard line. All of the sudden we caused a bobbled snap, and there was Sean Jones scooping up the loose ball and running right towards our seats in the Neyland Stadium End Zone. We went completely bonkers as he dashed by us and the rout was on. I think we heard Rocky Top a total of 2 more times that night. Which is still 2 more times than I care to hear it, but not bad indeed. Here’s a nice summary of the evening for all you UT fans:

7. November 29, 1997 / Georgia 27-Georgia Tech 24
We closed out 1997 aiming for a sweep of Tech for my college years. The game was your typical back and forth rival slugfest. I didn’t sense we were in trouble until Tech jumped ahead 24-21. I knew we could rally, but a drive highlighted by Champ Bailey’s pass catching clinic was nearly derailed by a Tech interception with about a minute left. I quickly scanned the field and saw a yellow spec (that was too bright to be a Tech shaker) thrown by the back judge indicating pass interference on Tech. Mike Bobo took the second chance and threaded a dart to Corey Allen in the back of the end zone with 30 seconds left to give us a win and sweep of Tech.

6. October 7, 2000 / Georgia 21-Tennessee 10
As a student and fan of UGA from my first day on campus in 1994, I had seen UGA pull off triumphant wins and close calls against big rivals like Tech, Florida, Auburn, and Clemson. But the one thing that gnawed away at me was not being able to beat Tennessee and their smug fans who think that Rocky Top is a classic of folk music. But on that night, everything lined up finally for the Dawgs. Even tailgating that day, I had a sense that tonight would be different. The Dawgs took it right to UT and beat them at their own game, running the ball and playing stout defense. Even when UT took a 10-7 lead early in the 3rd quarter, I had confidence that we’d get the job done. Quicy Carter led UGA on a 99 yard drive and got us ahead for good early in the 4th quarter. Then the defense just willed us the rest of the way. After stopping UT on 4th down and putting the game away, you knew what was next. The area around the hedges turned into a mass of humanity which quickly stormed the field and tore down the goalposts. It’s too bad we ruined the hedges, but on this night, after so many years of frustration, UGA finally broke through.

5. October 2, 2004 / Georgia 45-LSU 16
On a sun-splashed afternoon, UGA used the 2 losses from the prior year as motivation and completely routed the defending national champs. David Greene was masterful throwing the ball and had perhaps his finest afternoon from a pure passing standpoint. LSU had no clue what hit them. Georgia looked like a national champion contending team and played their most complete 4 quarters of football of the year.

4. October 5, 2002 / Georgia 27-Alabama 25
This has got to be the hottest, most humid day I’ve ever spent outside watching the Dawgs play. Pat Dye said we weren’t “man enough” to beat Alabama. It sure looked like we were on that first drive as we plowed down the field capped by a Musa Smith TD. Back and forth we went; this game had everything. Acrobatic long touchdown catches. Blocked kicks. Hard hits on defense. Long drives. Bama took a late lead, but what followed was the most complete display of execution by all segments of our team. It started with excellent punt return blocking and a nice return. Then the offense came roaring down the field, not with a big pass play or run, but methodically, taking time off the clock. Needing only a field goal, the offense got Billy Bennett in range and kicking right towards our end zone seats. The ball sailed high and right through the posts giving us the lead. Then we had a tremendous kick coverage, pinning Bama deep. Thomas Davis capped it off by picking off a Brodie Croyle and the win was ours. I give credit to the Crimson Tide fans, of all the fans I’ve come across, they are the most rational and generally pleasant folks to deal with after a game, win or lose.

3. November 30, 2002 / Georgia 51-Georgia Tech 7
Having 2 weeks to savor 70-X takeoff and clinching the SEC East in Auburn, Georgia came home to a raucous celebration on Senior Day in Sanford Stadium. The weather was crisp, cool, and perfect for late November. It became obvious after about 3 minutes that Tech was going to be in for a loooonnnnggg day. We ran at will. Pollack was everywhere causing havoc. Boss Bailey jumped as high I’ve ever seen a football player jump to block a field goal. David Greene bombed away. Heck, ol’ JT Wall even got in on the action in the second half. What a great day. If you ever come across a Tech fan, be sure to remind them what time it is: 6:09 (that’s 51 to 7).

2. November 1, 1997 / Georgia 37-Florida 17
There are so many wonderful memories I will take with me from being a 4 year member of the Redcoat Band. However, if I had to pick one, it would be the weekend of October 30-November 2, 1997. From the all night bus ride to St. Augustine to the Friday hotel tailgate avoiding the downpour to the Landing that night. When Saturday morning arrived, it was clear and beautiful. We bused over St. Johns River and entered the Cocktail Party frenzy. The game finally kicked off at 3:30 and it felt so different than prior games against the Gators. We were confident. We played with no fear. We threw everything from our playbook at them. The defense was lights out. Even when Florida took a brief lead early in the 3rd quarter, we came right back took the lead, then flexed our muscle. I can still visually in my mind see Robert Edwards break off tackle and rumble 37 yards to ice the game with five minutes left. The scene afterwards with equal parts joy, hysteria, reflection, and pure unbridled emotional release. I’m not ashamed to admit I was fighting off tears of joy in the post game concert and on the bus ride back to the hotel. It was a glorious day and night. And then I got my head shaved on the ride home, as I promised I would my freshman year if we were to beat Florida.

1. November 10, 2007 / Georgia 45-Auburn 20
Following our Dance Dance Revolution win in Jacksonville (complete with Mark Richt almost going PG-13 with Mrs. Richt afterwards), we came out a bit sluggish and had to struggle to beat Troy. Sensing he needed a spark, he got the word out that the Seniors wanted everyone to wear black to the GA/AU game the following week. I like a lot of you, thought it was a neat idea, but I had my doubts given the fact that UGA fans sometimes get unfairly pegged for a lack of enthusiasm or spirit. When you compare us to other fan bases, we’re known for showing up right before kickoff, and sitting back and enjoying the view from the most ascetically beautiful vista to watch football. But since I like the color black, and well heck, it’s one of our school colors, I went along it. Upon arriving on campus that morning, I was pleasantly surprised that most fans were going along with it too. I even remember seeing some fans who didn’t plan ahead go buy a black shirt to be part of the action. As we walked down to the stadium, it was a feeling of solidarity amongst the fans, regardless of age, race, sex, or place in life, with us all in our black. After entering Gate 6, getting a cold beverage, I walked to the tunnel to go to our seats in Sec. 123. The scene that awaited my eyes was the most breathtaking I’ve ever witnessed at ANY sporting event in my life. There in front of me was a sea of complete black. EVERYONE was in on it and the seemed to be savoring the moment. You knew something special was about to happen. Pregame had more energy then I’ve ever seen. The student sections were unconscious. Then of course everyone waited for that special moment of the players arrival out of the tunnel. Would they be in black? I thought I would get a jump start by watching the captains jerseys, since they have to come out early. When they were donned in the traditional red, I was a bit bummed, but I noticed that none of the other players were milling around the statue in the East end zone as they typically do before running out. Then I saw the big black signs blocking the view from down below and I knew they had pulled off the black jerseys. I’m glad I remembered that moment because about a second later a deafening roar engulfed us as Sanford Stadium almost exploded as UGA hit the field.

The game itself was tremendous too. First play of the game was a pick by Kellin Johnson. Matthew Stafford bombing away to MoMass. Sean Bailey tiptoeing in for a late 1st half TD. Once again, even when the opponents took the lead, UGA never blinked and proceeded to out “Auburn” Auburn by running the ball at will and creating havoc on defense. After UGA had built a comfortable lead, the party officially got underway. First it was Soulja Boy and Crank That, with the UGA bench and fans turning Sanford Stadium into a nightclub. Then Thomas Brown got his due and got a long run and subsequent TD. The butt-whipping was on, and afterwards hearing “Back in Black” was greeted with another supersonic roar from the crowd. So what that it took us 4 hours to get home that day? I didn’t mind at all because it was a day like no other for Dawg fans. We were loud and boisterous from pregame through postgame, and we were united like never before in cheering on UGA. That’s why this was my favorite game seen live and in person.

Would You Like Fries With That?

There’s a well known Latin phrase that customers always are warned about: “Caveat Emptor” (translated to buyer beware). That phrase is now coming into clear view in regards to our new printer/scanner. I don’t want to throw the vendor under the bus, so let’s say the printer was made by a company who’s name rhymes with “Dewlett Rackard”.

A few weeks ago, we decided to look into getting a scanner. That led us to then consider getting an all in one printer/scanner. A trip to Best Buy and a chat with one of the “experts” there resulted in purchasing an all in one Photosmart unit. We got it home, hooked it up, and proceeded to have the ink cartridges not function. So we placed a call to customer service who kindly sent us replacement cartridges at no cost. Got those installed, and the printer seemed to work OK scanning and printing documents.

Fast forward to last week and our attempts to print some pictures to take to the guys day care for their classes. Rebecca goes up to print the pictures, but the photo software can’t find them. She gets onto a web chat with the customer service rep who is overseas (3 guesses which country he’s in). They try to trouble shoot but can’t fix it and Rebecca is told that she has to call the customer service line.

Yesterday I worked from home so I decided to call them up. Luckily, we have speakerphone now installed in our office, which my neck is already thanking me many times over for its use. I call up customer service and the guy (referred to as Thing 1 now) wants to take control of my computer to try to fix the problem. While hesitant to give Thing 1, who is thousands of miles away control, I agree to do so and he starts by uninstalling and reinstalling the same software package Rebecca uninstalled and reinstalled 2 times before. I get Rebecca on my cell phone so we have a pseudo conference call going. Thing 1 tries to show how smart he is by enlightening me on the use of the right click feature of my mouse. Wow. Then Thing 1 grabs his script because I am informed of a special deal the company is running on notebooks and he can get me all set up for only $799. Um, not interested, but thanks. Reminds me this offer is only good today. Still. Not. Interested. Finish up the call, I think the printer is fixed.

About 2 hours later I realize I STILL can’t access the photos that are clearly visible in our My Pictures folder. So it’s time for another call and computer takeover help session with Thing 2. Thing 2 does actually get the software package to recognize all the pictures, but confirms it’s a manual process to add a folder each time you create one (like any normal person would do when organizing pictures). Still can’t get the printer to recognize the flash drive when it’s plugged directly into the printer. Decide to see if it’s an issue with the flash drive (Rebecca bought some new ones yesterday) and get an ID # when I’m ready to call back. But wait! Thing 2 wants to make sure I’m aware that there is a special running on extended warranties and asks if I would want to get hooked up there. It never ends with those guys in customer service! I’m wondering what the commission rate is if they sucker someone into a deal?

Best Of UGA - Vol. 1 - "The Players"

As promised, the first of a 4 part series leading up to the start of the UGA football season. Once again, the only criteria I am using is the fact that I personally had to witness the subject/person listed. Without further adieu, my favorite players of the past 15 years (1994-2008):

10. TIE - Matthew Stafford QB (2006-8) / Eric Zeier QB (1994)
A fitting tie since both were highly skilled QB's who led UGA to some impressive wins through the air, yet both left without winning an SEC title. Had he been in Spurrier's offensive system, I bet Zeier would have passed for 5,000 yards and 35 touchdowns his senior year. And now I have a reason to watch the Lions other than on Thanksgiving while prepping the turkey for frying.

9. Robert Edwards RB (1995-7)
Originally signed as a defensive back, one of the last wise decisions Coach Goff made was to convert Edwards to RB just before the start of the 1995 season due to depth issues. All he did was rip off 4 rushing TD's in his first game against SCAR. The next week, he suffered a year ending injury, had a solid 1996, and returned to top form in 1997. Without a doubt his highlight was his dominating performance against FLA in the Cocktail Party, sealing the win with a beautiful 30 yard TD in the 4th quarter. Great bookends to his career.

8. Boss Bailey LB (1998-2002)
While his play at LB was solid, his uncanny knack for reaching Superman height in blocking field goals was his calling card. He blew out his knee on the opening kickoff of the 2000 season, earning a medical redshirt. Good thing for us come 2002 when he leaned on his defensive leadership to win the SEC for the first time since 1982.

7. Billy Bennett K (2000-3)
The tiny southpaw kicker from right in Athens was clutch all throughout his career, including a huge game winning kick against Bama in 2002.

6. Knowshown Moreno RB (2007-8)
Oh how Coach Richt wishes he didn't redshirt him in 2006. Just an unbeleiveable ball of energy, which I know rubbed other teams the wrong way, but I loved it. It's how you should play every down. Wasn't afraid to deliver a blow heading out of bounds, was great in the screen game, and could outrun more people than he was given credit for.

5. Thomas Davis S (2001-4)
I've seen alot of UGA football in the past decade and a half, and without a doubt the hardest hits I have witnessed were delivered courtesy of Mr. Davis. From our seats in 123, we could see receivers going across the middle and there was Davis lurking, ready to strike. And boy did he.

4. Champ Bailey CB (1996-8)
It's not often that college coaches gameplan against one player, like you see in the NFL, but Boss' older brother was so fast, quick, and skilled as a cornerback that he could take away half the field with his coverage skills. Coach Donnan rightly figured that he was too valuable not on the field, so Champ got some spot duty on offense too, and made a huge catch and run in the comeback against Tech in 1997.

3. Hines Ward QB/RB/WR (1994-1997)
Our seatmate Jimmy's hometown hero (go Forest Park, GA) Ward might have been the best pure athlete I've seen don the red & black. He held his own when pressed into emergency QB duty in 1995, and developed into a skilled pass catcher and deadly blocker (ask any NFL team to verify that and they will). He also had a huge game against FLA in 1997, making throws off of reverses and racking up huge receiving yardage.

2. David Greene QB (2001-4)
He wasn't the fastest on his feet, but he did enough to avoid the sack. He didn't have the strongest arm, but could put a 40 yard bomb on a dime. He wasn't fiery or in your face, but he led by example and holds the record for most wins by a starting quarterback in NCAA D-1 history. All David Greene did was won, and looked like he knew he would the whole time. Cool under pressure, knowledgeable of the offense, and smart enough to take what the defense gave him. A winner, in the truest sense.

1. David Pollack DE (2001-4)
Easily the hardest working player I've ever seen play at UGA, and that holds true even today. Pollack was a smart, feisty, and relentless pass rusher. He made athletic plays that someone of his size/dimensons had no business making. You could almost feel the bliss he had playing football, along with his enduring love for Georgia. UGA should honor Pollack for his outstanding play, but in a unique way. His #47 should be reserved for a player voted on by his peers as having the desire, work ethic, and heart that David Pollack embodied as a member of the Dawgs. I can think of no better way to honor and celebrate the best individual player I've seen in the past 15 years.

An Experiment

We're back from a nice 4 day trip to PA to visit my family up there. Flights were good (i.e. not delayed), kids were behaved, and everyone had a great time, despite Liam getting up at 6 AM every day (due to it being lighter earlier). Got to go back to Sesame Place for the first time in 25 years or so, it's changed a bunch, but some parts remain the same.

Lately, I've been thinking about setting some goals on a professional and personal level. One such goal involves our family's finances. To that point, I've heard of a few folks who have recommended, or are trying, to control their debt and finances using the teachings of Dave Ramsey. I've started downloading his podcasts and listen to them frequently while on my commutes. By no means do I think I, or we, are ready to go "all in" with his plan. However, he has inspired me to try something as an experiment.

Beginning tomorrow, Rebecca and I will attempt to go the next 30 days without using any credit cards for purchases. Debit card and checks are OK for groceries, gas, store needs, etc. Of course we are reserving the right to use a credit card in an emergency situation, but I'm confident that we can make this work and see what the impact is on our overall budget and expenditures. Wish us luck!

If Your Blood Runs Red & Black...

The calendar has flipped to the month of August. Which means its time to officially get pumped up about the forthcoming football season. And if you know anything about me, that means only 2 colors start to flow through my blood: Red and Black.

It’s hard to believe that just about 15 years have passed since late August 1994 when a fresh faced Yankee from Langhorne, PA set foot on the campus of the University of Georgia at Redcoat band camp (insert “one time” joke). It was amazing meeting so many new faces and joining a group that was 350 strong. But that was just the beginning.

My first game in the fall of 1994 was in the Roach Bowl in Columbia, SC. We barely made it in the stands by kickoff. I sat down and then proceeded to watch Eric Zeier zip a long touchdown pass and for the first time I played, and felt “Glory Glory to Ol’ Georgia”. The next week was the first time Between the Hedges, and I recall being in awe of the size of the players and the how Sanford Stadium just kept rising and rising high into the warm September evening.

The 4 years spent at UGA went by in a blink, but the memories will undoubtedly last a lifetime. Many of those memorable moments were spent as a Redcoat and seeing the Dawgs battle it out in the SEC and against our in state foes from the North Avenue Trade School. Once I graduated, I made the VERY wise decision to purchase 2 season tickets and begin to take in football games as a proud alumnus. While my vantage point (and access to the field) may have changed, my enthusiasm did not. More great memories continued to flow, and now I am extremely proud to involve my whole family in fall Saturdays in Athens, GA.

Over the next few weeks I’m going to share some of my favorite UGA football memories in the past decade and a half via a series of countdowns. Get ready for a stroll down memory lane with many exciting plays, games, players, and moments. I have one self-imposed caveat: in order for the list to be as personally authentic as possible, I am going to only include items where I personally was in the stands to see the moment, player, etc. That means, alas, no Hobnailed Boot, Pollack sack/INT/touchdown in one, or end zone celebration references, as I was not in attendance at those games. But I hope to provide some great memories for Dawg fans and highlight some under the radar moments that you all may have forgotten, but I sure haven't.
